Who Is Errl Hill Extracts?

Errl Hill Extracts is a California cannabis brand built around a simple principle: exceptional concentrates require exceptional starting material.

The company works closely with its farm operation, including Fire Mountain Farms and Errl Hill Farms, where cannabis is cultivated in large living-soil trenches and irrigated using captured rainwater. According to Harry, the same care given to food grown on the farm is applied to cannabis.

That connection between cultivation and extraction gives Errl Hill tighter control over quality from the field to the finished concentrate.

As Harry puts it, the old rule still applies:

Gold in, gold out.

In other words, extraction cannot rescue poor flower. Great concentrates begin before the material ever reaches the lab.


Live Resin That Still Tastes Like the Plant

Errl Hill first built its reputation around live resin.

During the interview, Harry introduces several recent drops, including:

  • Cranberry Z, featuring genetics connected to Cha Genetics
  • Strawberry Chocolate, created through work with DNA Genetics
  • Saucy live resin batters designed to preserve aroma and flavor

The Cranberry Z stands out for its tart, candy-like profile. The discussion highlights how individual consumers may interpret terpenes differently. One person may smell cranberry candy, while another may pick up cereal, fruit, or sharper acidic notes.

That variation is part of what makes terpene-rich extracts compelling. The goal is not simply potency. It is expression.

For cannabis processors, the takeaway is clear: a memorable live resin product should reflect the flower it came from, not taste like a reconstructed approximation.


Why Some Live Resin Vapes Taste “Altered”

One of the most useful parts of the interview comes when Harry discusses vape formulation.

The Errl Hill team found that many live resin vapes did not taste exactly like the concentrate they started with. Some tasted as though something had been removed, added, separated, or reintroduced.

Even when terpenes are extracted and later blended back into the oil, the finished product can sometimes lose part of its natural character.

That challenge shaped Errl Hill’s approach to vape development.

The goal is not merely to make the oil flow through hardware. The goal is to retain the flavor and character of the original extract.

For processors, that means hardware selection cannot happen at the end of product development. The oil, heating technology, airflow, and device format must be evaluated together.

A good device should support the formulation—not force the formulation to become something else.


Farm Quality Is the First Step in Hardware Performance

Errl Hill’s cannabis is grown in large living-soil beds using captured rainwater. Harry describes trenches approximately 170 feet long, four feet deep, and 18 feet wide.

The farm reportedly uses a rainwater catchment pond holding approximately 400,000 gallons.

That farming system matters because environmental conditions influence terpene expression. Harry gives the example of Blueberry Muffin, which can develop a noticeable cinnamon-like note during wetter seasons.

This is terroir in a very practical sense.

Weather, soil biology, water, geography, and genetics can all affect the aroma, viscosity, and performance of an extract.

For cannabis oil processors, this creates a technical reality: even products made under the same brand may behave differently depending on the cultivar and harvest.

That is why proper hardware testing should include more than one strain or batch.


From Grateful Dead Genetics to Modern Cannabis Extraction

Harry’s cannabis background stretches back roughly 30 years.

He explains that genetics and cannabis culture were closely connected to the Grateful Dead touring community. Seeds and cultivars moved between regions through people attending shows, creating an early exchange network long before regulated cannabis supply chains existed.

He recalls a time when premium Humboldt-grown flower could function almost like currency among touring fans.

That history matters because Errl Hill’s current products are connected to a much older cannabis tradition: relationships, genetics, cultivation knowledge, and shared appreciation for quality.

The tools have changed. The standard has not.


Live Rosin: Premium Quality With a Smaller Audience

The discussion then shifts to live rosin.

Rosin has grown rapidly as consumers search for solventless concentrates and stronger terpene expression. However, Harry points out a basic market reality: as products become more expensive, the potential customer base becomes smaller.

That does not reduce rosin’s importance.

Rosin often functions as a quality benchmark for the concentrate category. It attracts knowledgeable consumers, drives product innovation, and encourages processors to improve cultivation, washing, pressing, storage, and hardware selection.

During the interview, Errl Hill showcases a Honey Banana live rosin with a creamy texture and pronounced banana aroma.

The product demonstrates how a well-made solventless extract can deliver a distinctive sensory experience without relying on added flavor systems.


How Errl Hill Chooses Between Live Resin and Live Rosin

Not every cultivar belongs in every extraction format.

Some strains may perform beautifully as live resin but produce weak rosin yields. Others may wash and press well but offer less differentiation after processing.

Errl Hill evaluates material based on several factors:

  • Cultivar quality
  • Terpene expression
  • Extraction yield
  • Final texture
  • Consumer demand
  • Vape compatibility
  • Product velocity

Harry notes that all-in-one vape demand now influences where some strains are allocated.

That is a meaningful shift.

Instead of treating vapes as a secondary format, brands are increasingly deciding cultivation and extraction plans around the performance of vape products.


Why All-in-One Vapes Are Bringing New Consumers Into Live Resin

According to Harry, all-in-one vapes have become one of Errl Hill’s fastest-moving formats.

They provide a familiar entry point for consumers who may have previously purchased distillate products but want stronger flavor and a fuller extract experience.

The convenience matters.

A consumer does not need a dab rig, torch, loading tool, or detailed concentrate knowledge. They can access a live resin product through a simple, portable format.

That makes all-in-one hardware an important bridge between mainstream vape consumers and premium cannabis extracts.

For processors, the opportunity is significant—but only when the hardware can preserve flavor, manage viscosity, and deliver consistent oil flow.


Live Resin Versus Live Rosin: The Format Should Fit the Strain

Harry offers a perspective that may surprise solventless purists:

When live resin is produced correctly, it can be one of the best expressions of cannabis.

His argument is based partly on strain diversity.

More cultivars can often perform successfully in live resin production than in live rosin production. Rosin depends heavily on washability and yield, which can limit the genetics available for commercial production.

Live resin can therefore provide a broader flavor library while still preserving much of the character of the original plant.

The real lesson is not that one format is universally better.

It is that the extraction method should fit the genetics, the consumer, and the intended product experience.


What Cannabis Processors Can Learn From Errl Hill

The Errl Hill conversation offers several practical lessons for cannabis brands and processing teams.

Start with the farm

Hardware cannot compensate for weak cultivation or poor starting material.

Test more than potency

Flavor, viscosity, oil flow, and long-term device performance matter just as much as cannabinoid percentage.

Match the format to the cultivar

Some strains belong in live resin. Others belong in rosin. Let the plant and the process guide the decision.

Treat vape hardware as part of formulation

Oil and hardware must be tested together. A device that works for one cultivar may not perform identically with another.

Protect the original character

The strongest vape products do not taste assembled. They taste connected to the plant.
